Whether you are a cage fighter or a
traditional martial artist, most styles all have punching in there some
where. The use of a makiwara board will create a devastating punch that
you will never get from putting on big padded gloves and using a heavy
bag. Read on to find out how you can incorporate makiwara training into
your martial arts routine.
The makiwara is translated as a forging post, which basically is a
springy hardwood board that is mounted to a base at the floor and has a
thin pad at the top. Traditionally, makiwaras were wrapped in rice
rope, but as they evolved, many home practitioners have found all kinds
of different pads.
Makiwara training toughens the skin of the knuckles, creating big
calluses over time, much more equipt to pack a punch than a standard
fist. Makiwara training also makes the bones in the hand denser as you
hit the solid board with your bare fist. This is a similar density that
happens to the leg bones of runners as they get used to hitting the
pavement over and over.
There are risks to using a makiwara, but if used properly it can create
a punch that is so solid, your opponent will have no idea where it came
from. It will literally feel like they got hit with a bat. You can
easily create a makiwara for home use with a few supplies from your
local home center and a proper set of instructions. By adding makiwara
training to your martial arts or MMA practice, you will have an
incredible edge over your opponent.
