The fist in one of the most critical tools for the
martial artist. With a tough fist, you will be able to develop some
serious punching power. Without it, you can break your hand in a fight,
and even worse, lose to your opponent. Here are some quick tips on
making the toughest fist on the planet:
1. The weakest part of
your fist is your pinkie finger. Pull back your pinkie and just try to
make a solid fist. Bend your pinkie in as far as it will go, push
your
pinkie sideways into the other fingers of the fist. Your pinkie and
thumb lock the other fingers together, creating a rock-like fist.
2.
Do not make a fist around your thumb, tucking your thumb inside your
fist. This is a quick way to break your thumb. Simply fold your thumb
under the second set of knuckles on the outside of the fist. Never
fight with your thumb sticking up either. Not only does it look dumb,
but you can catch it on your opponents clothing and it also makes your
fist much weaker.
3. Makiwara training is essential to creating
an iron-like fist. The makiwara is a striking post that you train your
bare fist against. You can easily make your own or purchase a custom
made one on-line. The makiwara is a traditional Japanese training tool
that creates dense bones in the hand over time and large callouses that
will protect the knuckles, if trained properly.
4. Create the
tightest fist possible. The harder you squeeze, the harder the fist
becomes, making the opponent feel like they have been hit with a rock.
If you make a loose fist, not only will it lesson the blow to your
opponent, but you can also injure your hand on impact.
